Figures of Speech

 

1. Simile

Meaning:
A simile is a figure of speech that compares two different things using the words "like" or "as".

Example:

  • She is as graceful as a swan.

  • His smile was bright like the sun.

2. Metaphor

Meaning:
A metaphor is a figure of speech that directly compares two unrelated things by saying one is the other. It does not use "like" or "as".

Example:

  • Time is a thief.

  • Her voice was music to his ears.

3. Repetition

Meaning:
Repetition is a literary device where words or phrases are repeated to emphasize an idea or theme.

Example:

  • Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

  • I have a dream… I have a dream… I have a dream… (from Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech)

4. Alliteration

Meaning:
Alliteration is the repetition of the same beginning consonant sounds in a sequence of words.

Example:

  • She sells seashells by the seashore.

  • Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.
