 ๐Ÿ’  What is a Noun?

A noun is the name of a person, place, animal, thing, or idea. It is one of the eight parts of speech in English grammar.

๐ŸŸฉ Examples:
Ravi (person), Mumbai (place), lion (animal), book (thing), freedom (idea)


Types of Nouns

There are 5 main types of nouns:


1️⃣ Proper Noun

A Proper Noun is the specific name of a person, place, or thing. It always starts with a capital letter.

๐ŸŸฉ Examples:
Sachin Tendulkar, India, Ganga River, Sunday, Taj Mahal

๐ŸŸข In sentence:
Virat Kohli is a famous cricketer.


2️⃣ Common Noun

A Common Noun is a general name for people, places, or things of the same kind or class. It is not capitalised unless at the beginning of a sentence.

๐ŸŸฉ Examples:
boy, city, river, day, monument

๐ŸŸข In sentence:
The boy is playing in the park.


3️⃣ Collective Noun

A Collective Noun refers to a group of people, animals, or things considered as a single unit.

๐ŸŸฉ Examples:
team, flock, army, bunch, class

๐ŸŸข In sentence:
A flock of birds flew over the lake.


4️⃣ Abstract Noun

An Abstract Noun is the name of a quality, idea, emotion, or state that cannot be seen or touched.

๐ŸŸฉ Examples:
honesty, love, bravery, freedom, childhood

๐ŸŸข In sentence:
Honesty is the best policy.


5️⃣ Material Noun

A Material Noun is the name of a material or substance from which things are made.

๐ŸŸฉ Examples:
gold, wood, cotton, sugar, iron

๐ŸŸข In sentence:
This ring is made of gold.


๐Ÿ” Some nouns can belong to more than one type based on how they are used:

Example:
"India" = Proper Noun
"Country" = Common Noun
"Love" = Abstract Noun
"Team" = Collective Noun
"Steel" = Material Noun

Identify the Nouns – Practice Worksheet

Read each sentence carefully. Try to find the nouns in the sentence and write what kind of noun they are (e.g., name, group, feeling, substance, etc.)

  1. Ravi gave his friend a bunch of flowers with love made from paper.
  2. India has a strong army that protects every citizen with great bravery using steel weapons.
  3. Sita saw a dog running toward a group of children with fear in its eyes and jumped over a wooden bench.
  4. Rahul joined the class where every student is taught about honesty using chalk.
  5. Priya gifted a girl a bouquet with kindness made from cotton.

Task: Underline the nouns and try to identify which are names, groups, feelings, general things, or materials.
