What are Parts of Speech?

Parts of speech are the types or categories of words used in English. Each word in a sentence has a job to do. The job (or function) of a word is called its part of speech.
There are 8 main parts of speech:

1. Noun (Name of a person, place, thing, or idea)
A noun is the name of something. It can be a person, place, animal, thing, or idea.
Examples: Ramesh, Mumbai, dog, book, honesty
Sentences: Sita is reading a book. / Honesty is the best policy.

2. Pronoun (Takes the place of a noun)
A pronoun is a word that we use instead of a noun, to avoid repeating the noun.
Examples: I, you, he, she, it, we, they, him, her
Sentences: Ravi is my friend. He is kind. / This is my pen. Is this yours?

3. Verb (Action or state of being)
A verb shows action or a state of being (like is, am, are).
Examples: go, eat, run, is, am, sleep, was
Sentences: I eat an apple. / She is happy. / They played football.

4. Adjective (Describes a noun or pronoun)
An adjective gives more information about a noun or pronoun. It answers questions like: What kind? How many? Which one?
Examples: big, red, five, tall, smart, beautiful
Sentences: He has a red car. / She is a smart girl. / We saw three birds.

5. Adverb (Describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb)
An adverb gives more information about how, when, where, or to what extent something happens.
Examples: quickly, very, slowly, well, never, always, here
Sentences: He ran quickly. / She is very tired. / I never lie.

6. Preposition (Shows the relation of a noun or pronoun to another word)
A preposition shows the relationship of a noun or pronoun to something else in the sentence. It often tells location, direction, or time.
Examples: in, on, at, under, over, before, after, between, beside
Sentences: The book is on the table. / She sat under the tree. / He came after lunch.

7. Conjunction (Joins words, phrases, or sentences)
A conjunction is used to connect words, groups of words, or sentences.
Examples: and, but, or, so, because, although, while
Sentences: I want tea and coffee. / He is tall but slow. / I didn’t go because I was sick.

8. Interjection (Shows strong feeling or sudden emotion)
An interjection is a short word or phrase that expresses a feeling, emotion, or reaction.
Examples: Wow!, Oh!, Ouch!, Hey!, Hurray!, Alas!
Sentences: Wow! That’s amazing. / Oh! I forgot my keys. / Hurray! We won the match.

9. Articles:

Articles are words used before nouns to show whether the noun is specific or general.

There are three articles in English:

1. A – used before singular, countable nouns that begin with a consonant sound.
   Example: a book, a cat

2. An – used before singular, countable nouns that begin with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u).
   Example: an apple, an elephant

3. The – used before specific nouns (both singular and plural, countable or uncountable).
   Example: the sun, the books, the water

Types of Articles:

• Indefinite Articles: a and an (used when talking about something for the first time or something general).

• Definite Article: the (used when talking about something specific or already known).

Quick Tips:

• Use a/an when the listener doesn’t know which thing you mean.

• Use the when the listener knows which thing you mean or it's one of a kind.
