Human Reproductive System
1. Male Reproductive System:
The male reproductive system is basically a system for producing sperm, allowing sperm to mature, adding fluids to them, and finally carrying them outside the body.
The main parts are:
Testes
A male normally has two testes.
They are present inside a pouch called the scrotum.
The testes have two major jobs:
- They produce sperm.
- They produce the male sex hormone testosterone.
The testes are outside the main abdominal cavity because sperm production requires a temperature slightly lower than normal body temperature.
2. What is inside the testis?
Inside each testis there are many tiny, highly coiled tubes called seminiferous tubules.
You can imagine them as tiny factories where sperm are made.
Special cells present in these tubules undergo meiosis and eventually form sperm.
What is meiosis?
Meiosis is a special type of cell division.
A normal human body cell has:
46 chromosomes
But a sperm needs only:
23 chromosomes
So meiosis reduces the chromosome number by half.
Later:
Sperm (23) + egg (23) = 46 chromosomes
3. What happens to sperm after they are made?
Sperm don't simply jump directly from the testis outside the body.
They travel through a series of tubes.
The basic journey is:
Testis → Epididymis → Vas deferens → Ejaculatory duct → Urethra → Penis
Let's understand this journey.
Epididymis
The epididymis is a long, tightly coiled tube attached to the testis.
Newly produced sperm pass into it.
Here, sperm:
- mature
- gain the ability to move properly
- are stored for some time
So remember:
Epididymis = maturation + storage of sperm
Vas deferens
After the epididymis, sperm enter the vas deferens.
It is a tube that carries sperm towards the upper part of the reproductive system.
Think of it as a transport pipe.
Ejaculatory duct
The vas deferens joins the reproductive ducts near the glands.
The sperm-containing fluid passes through the ejaculatory duct.
Urethra
The urethra is the final passage through which semen leaves the male body.
Penis
The penis is the external organ through which semen is expelled during ejaculation.
4. Where does semen come from?
This is an important point:
Sperm and semen are NOT the same thing.
Sperm
Sperm are the actual male reproductive cells.
Semen
Semen is a mixture of:
Sperm + fluids from reproductive glands
The important glands shown in your diagram are:
- Seminal vesicles
- Prostate gland
- Cowper's glands
These glands add different fluids to the sperm.
5. Why is fructose present in semen?
The seminal vesicles add a fluid containing fructose.
Fructose is a type of sugar.
Sperm need energy to move their tails and travel through the reproductive tract.
So you can think:
Fructose → energy for sperm → helps sperm movement
6. Cowper's gland
The Cowper's glands are small glands present below the prostate.
They produce a fluid that contributes to the fluid of the reproductive tract and helps lubricate and prepare the urethral passage.
7. One interesting thing about the epididymis
The epididymis looks very small in the diagram.
But don't be fooled by its appearance.
It is actually a very long tube that is tightly coiled.
When stretched out, each epididymis is about 6 metres long according to your textbook.
That's roughly the height of a small two-storey building!
Similarly, the sperm itself is incredibly tiny — only about 60 micrometres long.
So imagine:
Tiny sperm → travelling through a surprisingly long system of tubes.
8. Female Reproductive System
Now let's understand the female system.
Its main parts are:
Two ovaries + two oviducts + one uterus + one vagina
9. Ovaries
A female normally has two ovaries.
The ovaries have two major reproductive functions:
- They contain and release oocytes (female reproductive cells).
- They produce female reproductive hormones.
An oocyte is commonly called an egg in simple school-level explanations.
10. What happens to the oocyte?
During the reproductive years, usually one oocyte is released during a menstrual cycle.
This release is called ovulation.
The oocyte is released from an ovary and is taken up by the nearby end of the oviduct.
11. Oviduct
The oviduct is also called the fallopian tube.
There are two oviducts — one associated with each ovary.
The end of the oviduct near the ovary is somewhat funnel-shaped.
This helps it receive the oocyte after it is released from the ovary.
The inner surface of the oviduct contains tiny hair-like structures called cilia.
These cilia help move the oocyte towards the uterus.
So:
Ovary → Oviduct → Uterus
12. Where does fertilisation happen?
This is one of the most important points.
When sperm enter the female reproductive system, they travel:
Vagina → Uterus → Oviduct
If an oocyte is present, sperm may reach it in the oviduct.
Usually, one sperm successfully fuses with the oocyte.
This process is called:
Fertilisation
After fertilisation, a zygote is formed.
So:
Sperm + oocyte → Fertilisation → Zygote
13. What is a zygote?
A zygote is the first cell formed after fertilisation.
Remember the chromosome numbers:
Sperm = 23
Oocyte = 23
After they fuse:
23 + 23 = 46
The zygote therefore has the normal human chromosome number.
The zygote then begins dividing and developing as it moves through the reproductive process.
14. Uterus
The uterus is a muscular organ.
If fertilisation occurs and development continues, the early embryo eventually reaches the uterus and implants in its lining.
The uterus then provides the environment in which the developing embryo/fetus can grow during pregnancy.
15. Vagina
The vagina is a muscular passage connecting the uterus/cervix region to the outside of the body.
During sexual intercourse, semen is deposited into the vagina.
The sperm then begin their journey:
Vagina → Uterus → Oviduct
16. Gamete formation
There are two important reproductive cells:
Male → Sperm
Female → Oocyte
These are called gametes.
Gametes are produced through meiosis, which reduces the chromosome number from 46 to 23.
This is extremely important because when two gametes join:
23 + 23 = 46
17. Difference between sperm production and oocyte availability
This is a very important difference between males and females.
Males
Sperm production begins around puberty and generally continues throughout adult life.
Females
Females are born with a large reserve of immature oocytes in their ovaries.
The textbook gives approximately:
2–4 million immature oocytes at birth.
But only a very small number are actually released during the reproductive years.
The textbook mentions approximately 400 oocytes being released through ovulation over the reproductive period.
Most of the remaining oocytes naturally undergo degeneration.
18. Menopause
Eventually, the reproductive phase of a woman comes to an end.
This is called menopause.
During menopause:
- ovulation stops permanently
- menstrual periods stop
- ovarian reproductive activity decreases greatly
- reproductive hormone patterns change
The textbook gives approximately 45–50 years as the usual age range, but the actual age can vary considerably from person to person.
19. Why does maternal age matter?
This is the concept shown in the first image.
A female's oocytes are formed before birth and remain in the ovaries for many years.
Therefore, an oocyte released when a woman is around 40–50 years old may have been present in her ovary for decades.
As the oocyte ages, the machinery responsible for correctly separating chromosomes during meiosis becomes more prone to errors.
This can sometimes result in an abnormal chromosome number.
One example is:
Down syndrome
Down syndrome is usually caused by having an extra copy of chromosome 21.
Important:
This does NOT mean:
“Older mother = baby will definitely have Down syndrome.”
It means:
The chance of certain chromosome abnormalities increases with increasing maternal age.
